Deep value investing has a simple premise: buy the things nobody wants. The complication is that "nobody wants this" and "this is currently sinking" look identical from the surface.

This hand-drawn design takes the phrase at its word. The sun is up there somewhere. The boat is down here on the seabed, name still proudly painted on the hull, surrounded by fish with no strong opinion on price-to-book ratios. The anchor is also down here, which was arguably always the plan.

Anyone who was online in early 2021 knows the other reading. That was the year the bottom of the ocean became a crowded place, and a handful of people who went shopping down there turned out to be extremely right. Everyone else got a story.
